At the end of the 18th century, Haiti accounted for over one-third of the entire Atlantic slave trade — importing 40,000 slaves per year. Ultimately, 800,000 Africans were forced into Haiti’s colonial plantation system. The life expectancy for a slave in Haiti was 21.
